Ten years ago, I published a strip titled "Instrumentality Project", contemplating the possibilities of existing in virtual forms. A year and a half later, I was writing about the new wonderful technology called Live2D, and Mirai Clock, an app that already used it. Four years ago, in a work on anime culture, I mentioned Kizuna AI reflecting on her virtual existence. One year ago, people around the whole world were forced to stay inside and move to communicating digitally. Today, virtual youtubers have not only entered the global scene, but are amassing millions in subscribers and topping superchat charts.

While the technology in its current form is, no doubt, still very limiting and ways away from offering true virtual existence for everyone, it already shows how it can let one take back control over what was previously predetermined for them — namely, physical appearance — and allow them to focus on improving what is within their grasp — that is, skills. Obviously, creating a virtual persona of that quality today is still very much a collective effort, but it already gives us a glimpse of the future in which the way we develop ourselves, and our existence itself, could change drastically.
